Yes... really good movie
 
Good film, although the bit where he's running away from the Russian sub wearing that heavy kit seems a little far fetched.

I guess that's why they always say in the credits 'based on a true events' :)
 
Not a bad movie at all, there's nice DVD version with an audio comment explaining the submarine 'incident', far fetched indeed, but according to Al Tilman, the director, all ex Navy personal on the film crew found the idea awesome. There's also a nice featurette about the real C. Brashear.

If you're interested in the guy, there's a 'book' available about him from the Naval Institute in Annapolis : "Reminiscences of Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate Carl M. Brashear (The)" by Paul Stillwell, it's not really a book, more a printout (unbound) but it costs only a bunch of bucks and it's well worth reading.
