What I have read is that authorities believe he got swept out of the channel and out to sea. The current can get pretty strong once you get North of the Reef's dock. That is especially true as you get further out toward the barrier reef. It is so very sad.

Searches involving volunteer divers as well as police and the staff of Tortuga Divers failed to find the missing snorkeler. The Reef Resort apparently called upon Cayman Helicopters to assist in the search.

The current can become very strong in this area, quickly sweeping the unwary out over the wall. If he sank, he would likely end up in water so deep that he will never resurface.

Snorkeling tours by boat are not conducted in this area. Snorkeling from shore is common, though snorkelers are warned not to venture out near the boat channel where currents turn out to sea.

The missing snorkeler is Norman Lee, a comic book artist of some renown.

I knew some people out on the Tortuga Divers dive boats the day this happened. They obviously didn't find anything searching around the reef that day. I've been diving with Tortuga Divers all this week on the East End and I can attest to the strong currents out here. Very sad deal for his family and friends.
