Note to self; when the prediction of 5-7' swells and 2' or less waves, believe it! We arrived at 8AM to a very foggy day. The waves were crashing along the coast of Monterey so we went to Lover's Pt. Beach. It looked fairly calm, and even though the water was running up high on the sand, the waves were small. (Little did we know what was to come.) We suited up and went in. We were nearly dragged out by the strong current, but kicked out on the surface for awhile and then went down. Oh boy, what a mess! A strong surge was flinging us all over, and there was loose kelp holdfasts everywhere. It was hard not to get tangled up, and we had to fight to swim and stay in one place. After a short dive we decided to head in and had to swim hard to reach shore as the currents kept pulling us in and out. There was a lot of particulate matter floating in the water, so the visibility was terrible. We had to crawl up onto the sand when we finally got back. Was temp. 55 degrees. Max depth; 31 feet for 38 minutes. When not to dive in Monterey (Lovers Beach, cove 9-29-12) - YouTube

Night dive at lovers point. Much better than last week. Vis was around 20 ft. Flat flat flat

Dove the breakwater today: flat calm, sunny, 20-30 ft viz, 53F to 57F depending on whose thermometer you believe.

kayak dive from Stillwater cove, pebble beach. Bright , sunny and warm with light breeze, perfect, topside. Went out to the far edge of the reef outside of the big rocks in the cove. Dropped into 50fsw depth out to ~70fsw. Viz was a hazy 20ft. interesting topography, little spires topped with kelp and overhanging ledges and vertical faces. Many cracks crevices and holes. Fun to explore, fish abundant and had a harbor seal encounter. I'll be returning here for sure.

Breakwater at 09:30 was 20-25 in the sand, about 15 to maybe 20 in the kelp. Temp was 57 degrees. 25+ once you got under 40'. Particulates increasing after 10:30

Did two at North Monastery. 10/19/2012. The water was blue but there were a million Salp in the water. That is no exaggeration. I’ve never seen that before. Awesome dives. Sun looked like it might have wanted to come out at the start of the second dive. When I surfaced it was very foggy. 35ft viz. 55 degrees. Here's a link. Difficult for the camera to focus with so much stuff in the water.
