A 2-day Nautical Archaeology Society course designed to strengthen teaching skills with certification of “Tutor” and “Instructor” depending on level of experience.
Benefit: Becoming certified to assist or instruct (teach) creates a community based program designed to inspire, teach and retain individuals for future coursework in knowledge-based areas and promotes a level-playing field for all who participate in the program. By understanding what is in the bottom of the bottomlands, you’ll have a greater appreciation on how to apply those resources in your curriculum, K-12 or any form of environment you teach in, including underwater archaeology in a scuba (PADI/NAUI) environment.

When you assist (as a tutor), you strengthen your own skills if you chose to progress to higher levels within the NAS Organization.

Everyone who attends this course will be a certified "tutor" & take something back and apply it in their scope of education/hobby. Whether it’s a University level instructor, K-12 classroom teacher, historian or a practicing archaeologist with little or unstructured training (just to name a few) – this will benefit everyone!

This is the time to create a standard baseline in becoming certified at any level in underwater archaeology, there are so many different varieties currently in use - it would be great to have standardization, state-wide.

The Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve Council (GTBUPC) is dedicated to building an interest in our underwater cultural heritage and advancing education in nautical archaeology through various forms (cultural heritage, history, science, math, eco-tourism). GTBUPC aims to preserve our underwater archaeological heritage by involving everyone – young students, adults, divers and non-divers, teachers, scientists, historians, and anyone with an interest in bringing a “hands on” technique to the classroom.

The Great Lakes Water Studies Institute of Northwestern Michigan College focuses on a new destination for learning about water — inspiring lifelong stewardship through education and partnerships. Among the institute’s activities:
· Learning — To provide learning opportunities about freshwater that foster stewardship of the Great Lakes and its watersheds.
· Collaboration — To build, support, and encourage partnerships that achieve shared missions for freshwater — including nonprofit organizations, businesses, K-12 schools, and school districts, higher education, research institutions, foundations, and others.
· Convening — To bring people and organizations together to learn about and address freshwater issues and needs.

History: The NAS program was first developed by NAS to train divers working on the archaeological recording of the Mary Rose, the flagship of King Henry VIII. Today the aim of the program is to build understanding of marine archaeology and teach people the practical skills they need to work on an underwater archaeology site. You don’t need any previous training or experience – and you don’t have to be a diver! Taking this a step further allows the educator in a classroom environment to take what is discovered and apply this in their own unique teaching structure. This means, science, history, cultural awareness, math, robotics etc. They all have some form of application within this NAS program!

Seating is limited and is open to everyone in Michigan. Cost will depend on number of participants but should be no more than $25 for the 2 day event. This course will probably never be offered again as it is too costly to bring Chris Underwood in from the United Kingdom unless he was close by training elsewhere.
