NAUTICAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY’S INTRODUCTION AND PART I CERTIFICATE IN FORESHORE AND UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY


When: Friday, August 19 to Sunday, August 21, 2005
Where: SCUBA 2000, 9033 Leslie Street, Richmond Hill, Ontario
Cost: $100 CAN
Eligibility: YOU MUST BE AN SOS MEMBER TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR NAS PROGRAM. If you are not a member of SOS, then you will need to join - an additional $25 payable to Save Ontario Shipwrecks.

COURSE SCHEDULE
The classroom, land training, and pool sessions on Friday evening and Saturday will be held at SCUBA 2000. The open water training will take place on the J.C. Morrison shipwreck at Lake Simcoe. We will give you maps and directions on Friday evening.

We have three goals for this weekend:
• To introduce you to the concepts and ethics that are the foundation of archaeology,
• To introduce you to underwater mapping and recording techniques,
• To provide you with an opportunity to develop mapping and recording skills under supervision.

7:00 pm Assemble, registration, paperwork, brief introductions
7:15 Introduction to the NAS
7:30 Practical exercise on archaeology
8:00 Introduction to ships and ship construction
10:00 End of day 1

Saturday
9:00 am Introduction to the scope of foreshore and underwater archaeology
9:20 Site types and basic dating methods
10:00 Area search & survey methods, includes diver and geophysical methods
10:15 Marine heritage legislation
10:30 Break
10:45 Diving safety
11:00 Underwater Survey: Fundamental principles and techniques
11:45 Field Notes
12:00 pm Lunch
1:00 Dry practical survey
2:30 Pool briefing and preparation of material
3:00 End of class portion – preparation at pool
4:00-6:00 Pool practical survey
7:00-10:00 Drawing up session/ Dinner and debriefing
