+1 for Kohala Divers. We have dived with them twice now. Great outfit, small groups, and you have the dive sites to yourself. We usually stay in either Waikoloa or Kawaihae, though. If we were staying in Kona, we'd pick another operator.

My husband and I did scuba diving with Big Island Hawai'i in late April this year. We dove with Bg Island Divers, and the service was friendly and the boat was big enough. The DMs were attentive, I have nothing to complaints about their service. The Manta dive at night was amazing - the snorkelers joined in the boat together with the scuba divers so the boat was full with people.

But the best of all dives we had with Big Island Divers was the blackwater dive - it was truly magical and a must do. You will be tied onto a rope under the boat and drift diving following the current. We finished the dive at midnight and were drifted until the Kona Airport! It was worth it. If I ever return to the Big Island I will certainly do the blackwater dive again.

!

Thanks for posting your review of the Black Water Dive. I had signed up for it but it was cancelled due to weather and that was the last night I could do it (had to fly the in two days). Quite frankly they didn't make it sound all that interesting but after reading your post it's definitely back on my list! And of course I will do the Manta Night Dive again!

I used Jack's Diving Locker, and although we had to cancel the Manta dive (rough seas, no Mantas) I did the Blackwater dive with them. (They call it Pelagic Magic)

What I liked about Jack's was that theirs started just after dark, versus Big Island Divers' starting after the Manta trips return, after 10 PM. For me, still jet lagged from the east coast, it was too hard to stay awake that late. Also they leave from the pier in town rather than from the marina up north near the airport, so less travel time for us.

It was an amazing experience! And only 3 of us on the boat that night!

I went out with Kona Diving Company for a week of diving last year. They were awesome.
