Most people dont know this but Gas cars with front electric defroster also have enough power to kill because the windshield uses AC straight from the alternator at up to 90 volts. That is not a consern underwater because to deliver AC power the gas engine has to run to turn the alternator, and a gas engine will not run under water.
I'll guess that hybrids also only produce AC while the gas engine is running and than convert AC to DC to charge the batteries.
Batteries suply only DC power
