its a shortfin pipefish

Could be... it's snout is shorter than the pictures I could find.. it does not seem to have the dorsal fin, but it has a fairly large fan tail... it also does not live where a shortfin pipefish normally does... this was about 2.5 miles off shore in around 80 ft of water...you have a reason for that specific ID?

along the sides and top of the body, there are rows
of diamond shape spots. they are faint, but on your first shot,
look near the head going back and they are there. some individuals have
them very easily noticible, but others they are faint as in yours
that is a key when ID ing a shortfin.:dork2:

Here is a slightly better image for that (and you can see the big fan tail):

Only problem I then have is where it is living.. which is not consided it habitat...thanks.

they all have that tail, but they spread
it when they move or are under attack.
what habitat did you find it in
nice shot btw:D

Off of Destin Florida, around 2 miles off shore (maybe less).. in around 80 of water... it's red matches the red sponge that coats a lot of stuff there. It is some concrete bridge rubble...Odd, because no red light gets down there.

Was hiding in a small clump of coral...about the size of your hand.. I had to pull it out to see what it was, as only about 1 inch was sticking out... got very upset when I did that..so I put it down and took it's picture.

the rubble you mentioned is key
pipefish can be found anywhere really,
but especially rubble and sea grass.
I am still sticking with shortfin. a nice find.:D

I never saw one in Florida, but saw shortfins in roatan
and st. vincent:D
