You know, I really think that only DM's who have done the ful time resort contract in a tropical busy resort, will understand the OP's frustration. I bet it wasn't even THAT guy, but that guy was just the last straw in a long line of divers who he must be responsible for, yet he is completely unfamiliar with. I even get my fair share of, what I call- "Urban Cowboys." They think they are too cool, and are far better than their reality. They do tend to buy equipment that is fine for others' needs, yet they have no real idea how to use it, no need for it, and yet it IS after all what all the cool kids are wearing... And for them, a little knowledge is very dangerous..
After being ignored by guys and girls like this, and then often having to bail them out of one issue or another, usually with no lesson learned by them, the DM get's frustrated and has to vent.

I feel for you OP. But it does make diving with the rest of the true cool kids, smart safe divers who understand their equipment and sport, lots of fun. I love my regulars. My boys. Fun, strss free, worth the few aggravating guys who come along. At some point, you have to just back up and let those be. Do what you can, as nicely as you can, and then power on.
