I count six steps in the five-point descent:

Signal, Orient, Regulator, Time, Equalise, Descend (and in real life I prefer to signal OK at the beginning and Down when I'm ready to drop, so that's seven steps).

I count six steps in the five-point ascent:

Signal, check time, prepare to vent BC, look up, raise right arm to protect head, ascend.

I find the whole 'five-point' thing unhelpful, to say the least.

I think we need an acronym thread. Some of mine are not 100% and sanctioned. It limits my ability to teach to all students.

For Example

Pre-Dive Safety Check

Begin (bouyancy)
With (weights)
Review (releases. mostly liability releases I think)
And (air)
Friend (final)

No one remembers this and it makes NO SENSE. Alternatives - -

Blonde Women Really Are Fun
Big Women Really Are Fat
Bruce Willis Ruins All Films
Big White Rabbits Are Fluffy (PC compatible)

I could never remember the BWRAF acronym until someone said,

Breathing
Water
Really
Ain't
Fun

Havn't forgotten it since!

Geez! We use the four point system.

1) "Hey, you good to go"

2) "Nah, hang on I can't remember which way this regulator lever gets pushed."

3) "OK, that oughta work, let's go...

4) Look up or down to see if anyone is actually descending with you and not twitching uncontrollably.

"Buddy check?"
"Yep, he's over there"
"OK.go"

STARS for the ascend.

S - Signal T - Timer A - Arms R - Rotate S - Slowly and safely ascend

I generally use R as "rotate and release air from your BDC" simply because it *should* be in there somewhere, but not every acronym is perfect...

oh, and a good one I heard (probably for younger adult classes :) ) is
Bangkok
Women
Really
Are
Fellas.

not offence to any Thai women [or men] here...

Congratulations to Red Tommo for 1st place in "most ancient thread to be resurrected" competition.

Descent: Are you ready? Response, big exhale and descend.

Ascent, shore dive style --- Stand up when I reach 3 feet depth.
Ascent, dive boat style --- A) slowly head towards 15' when desired. B) wait an appropriate amount of time. C) Thumbs up, then ascend after buddy agrees.
