PADI nay-sayers aside. The master diver course gives a goal for some to shoot for. It may even give some a reason to get rescue certed. Down side is it cost money, upside is it may encourge some to get other training and be exposed to some aspects of diving that if they just dove they may never see.
To each their own, if it's a goal and you reach it, congrats. If you don't care and you dive instead, congrats! (fwiw I don't have a master diver cert)
