Having experienced middle ear barotrauma, the last time during landing in a commercial aircraft, what is the correct way to relieve the squeeze to minimize the barotrauma? I know - preventation is the best cure.

Hi Andrew,

Treat ear congestion prior to broading and throughout the flight.

Yawning, swallowing, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy or slowly drinking water during decreases in altitude and upon landing often proves useful. If these fail, pressure equalization maneuvers just like those applied in scuba are recommended--early, often and gently.
