I do the same so that it why I like perpetual. The application becomes obsolete after years but I can still use it at will. I think I paid about $80 for Elements and Premiere years ago. You might keep an eye out for off the shelf applications at a major retailer that is on sale. Maybe even buy last years version - like buying cars.
 
I've a DC1400 so I never used this: UFRaw - User Guide -- they do list DNG under "supported formats".
 
Want to thank everyone for their inputs. Will be doing some research on products mentioned. Just received an email that my new DC2000 will be here tomorrow. Exchanged my DC1400 for it plus some cash. 4 weeks to go before 15 days of diving in Cozumel.
