Problem with an Inon D-2000 Type

If the camera's pre-flash triggers the Inon strobe (or any other strobe), then the strobe has to be set Not to fire with the preflash. Otherwise you get black pics. Install the magnet in the Inon D-2000, you can try it on land with low ambient light. In fact, always test all your equipment on ladn, that way you can experiment without wasting dive time. Just do not over-heat your strobe.
 
A question concerning D2000 sTTL: does the strobe have to be pointed straight at the target (say, nudibranch) in order for the strobe to function well in TTL or can it be pointed, for instance, behind it to avoid backscatter?
 
I very seldom point my D-2000 directly at my subject. The STTL works fine without the strobe being pointed directly at subject.
