I had a 14' Zodiac years ago. I rigged up a two rung rope ladder using aluminum conduit for the rungs. The top rung was a few inches below the top of the tube, the lower one about 18" to 24" below the surface. I would pull my knees up and put my feet on the lower rung. While holding the upper rung with my bent knees resting against the tube I would straighten my legs and up and over I went into the boat. It was fairly easy even with full gear on.

spear fishing on SCUBA?? I think it would be better to make him a free diver...

Why not? It's common in many parts of the world. I spear flatfish on scuba from time to time... no big deal.

I am curious what type of live-aboard would have an inflatable boat (other than their own tender) available for its passengers to use?

Funny what has to be accurate and what can be total fantasy when a writer writes. Who cares if it's doable? - if you need the character to vault in, have him vault in.

You got some guy on a live-aboard going off in an inflatable all by himself to scuba spear fish, and you think when the guy vaults back into the boat, the reader's going to shout, "Hey! That's not realistic."

Just write it as doable. A simple writer's trick...

BTW, if you were writing me as your hero, I could do it easily. :D
