I posted this on the Nor Cal board but also wanted to put it here for wider exposure.

Radio Lab is a public radio program, much like This American Life, and each week features different true stories based on the same theme.

This particular episode is entitled "Animal Minds," and is about just what it is that animals are thinking. The first story, around four minutes into the broadcast, is about a group of scuba divers who rescue a humpback whale from some crab pot lines 20 miles off the Northern California coast. The story up to that point is interesting enough, but the divers' description of the whale's reaction after being rescued is truly remarkable and is the subject of some debate on the program.

The story takes about ten or twelve minutes. The debate's about half of that.

Here's the link: Radio Lab.

"Animal Minds" is the first episode listed on the page. Just click on the "play" button on the player just above the episode listing.

Enjoy.

P.S. My wife says whales are smarter than bears.
