Is there a trick to these? I’m pushing as hard as I can and can’t get them to close. Wondering if I’m supposed to wedge something or pull something that I’m not seeing.

You're not alone. I always have to use a pair of pliers to close them.
Also: Don't use your teeth to open them.:)
 
They will not work on a double layer of web belt, only a single layer. Push with your thumb on the indent at top. Snug the clip down so you have a little space at that end. Press against a hard surface. Click!
 
I have little girl hands and I can do it, no pliers.
 
A pair of XS Scuba weight pockets on the waist belt, and a pair on the tank cam bands. Each can hold up to 5#. Various methods to keep them in place.
