jut use a c spanner ive been doing that way for 25 years never had a reg I couldn't get apart ....BUT use a quality c spanner not some Chinese crap from walmart

I've got a double ended non-adjustable 'hook' style spanner from my bike repair days. It was designed to take the lock nut off the bottom bracket of bikes in the 70's .
Kind of like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-He...rd_wg=nGIhl&psc=1&refRID=WEPFHKJH8ZPX21QW8V19
The one I actually have is so old you probably can't get it anymore. The linked one looks quite similar.

With a well secured reg, picking the end that mates best, making sure it's well engaged, I've never had a slip or problem.

Jeez, that closed set of tools is $$$!

get an old c spanner that's adjustable , mine is a 1950s one made in England I chrome plated it as it was rusty looks great for the last 20 years
