While doing a decompression stop in South Florida today, I was, as usual surrounded by tiny salps. I saw something that I have never seen before. It was a couple inches long, and it looked like a transparent ribbon with its outer edge rimmed with white. I could only see the outer edge--I can't even be sure there was anything in the middle. It moved in a very exaggerated series of sine curves. From the side it looked like a series of connected S's. If it would stop with the sine waves and flatten out would look like a transparent bandaid.
My dive buddy was quite sure it was another salp, but I don't know. Salps are primitive vertebrates, and I didn't see anything like that.
Any ideas?
