The California Department of Fish & Wildlife established several artificial reefs throughout the Santa Monica Bay. Beginning with car bodies and trolley cars and even tires, all failed. The metal bodies rusted away and the tires never attracted much life. A series of rockpiles have done much better.
The rockpiles are covered by gorgonians, corynactis anemones, and tunicates. Fish use the rocks as habitats and occasionally larger fish swim by.
