i have a couple of questions about the SDI standards.

the first question is this.....is there some where in the standards that identifies what course requirements (whether diver level, specialty, or leadership) must be verified under "direct" supervision of the certifying instructor as opposed to 'indirect" supervision. or is it assumed that all skills and requirements must be directly supervised and verified by the instructor. for example.....would an sdi instructor be allowed to send certified divers on a compass run while observing from the shore line during a navigation specialty course. or does the instructor need to be in the water directly observing the students during any training dives whether in pool or open water. i personally am always in the water with my students whether it is pool or open water work for any level course.

second......is there some where in the standards that gives a detailed definition of what an "assistant" is qualified to do and what they are not allowed to do when assisting an instructor. do any of these tasks given to the assistant need to be directly supervised by the instructor vs. indirectly. for example....with the other agency i am certified to teach for, they do not allow the assistant to perform any emergency skills. they are however, allowed to teach all other in water skills as well as any academics while under the indirect supervision of the instructor. does sdi have any similar limitations. i understand that sdi allows an ow instr to certify a divemaster and/or an AI while ssi does not. perhaps this may determine what differences there may be between the two agencies when it comes to this question.

i have recently crossed over to sdi/tdi and have yet to run any of their courses. but i have had some time to read over the standards and cannot seem to find a satisfactory answer. perhaps i missed it.
thx
