I have a SL960D and used it a while before I got an Inon D2000. Save the intermediate step -- get the Inon.

Sealife just unveiled an automatic Intensity version of the 962D....You can still adjust the flash intensity by hand or set it to automatic....it was really sweet, and ships soon...I would wait..PM me for pricing so as not to thread jack..

I used a sealife 960d. It was little use for wide angle, but was surprisingly powerful. It really did the job. Example pictures

I am BRAND new to photography, let alone uw photography, so i can be much help with details. But, if you are like me, not planning on upgrading to a dslr until the far future and already a little weary about paying all that money, I can warmly recommend this strobe. I am really a big advocate of it.

I ditto the comments to save your intermediate money and buy big. you won't regret it later. I don't like my SL-960. almost too much light, at least what is controlable. I LOVE my ikelite DS-125 on the other hand plus the built in focusing light is bright enough for a primary night dive light. Yes you could be 3-4 sealifes for the price of the ikelite. but you get what you pay for. Ikelite all the way.
