Military Justice differs from civilian justice in many ways, to long to explain the differences. Here is one for you though, a normal DUI for let's say a civic leader would just be a fine. In the military (Army) if an NCO; Non Comissioned Officer recieves a DUI then they are released from the service with a Bad Conduct Discharge.

Same goes for officers.

Society gives the military massive power to do almost anything. The military uses it's own laws to enforce a high standard of discipline. From hair cuts to war crimes, it needs its own set of rules and punishments that are more harsh than civi world.

As for the guy that fragged his own, gave him a blindfold and cigerette!!!

And as for officers shoot there sub-ordinates (a few posts back), that's why officers were issued pistols, to motivate the troops back in the day (as bad as that sounds). But world war 1 was a different type of war with a different type of soldier than today. Not that soldier were less motivated then, but conscripted and less confident about engaing the enemy (the ethic side not skill wise). That all changed by Korea and the Nam. "On Killing" is a very good book that speaks about this.
