Sean, it all depends on the expected outcome. I use manual mode for the DX-1g and try to use the highest aperture number (that is, the number that closes the aperture usually 9.1 or higher). I do this because I want more depth of field in the picture. If you want only the main object to be in focus with a blurred background you would need to open the aperture (smaller aperture number). The other consideratin is the shutter speed. If you want to ensure a higher shutter speed, then open your aperture. The smaller the aperture, the slower the shutter speed).
