There are quite a few books available to identify sharks (distinguishing characteristics, home waters, behavior) but I haven't found anything on video or DVD. You'd think there would be a marine biologist film on this somewhere!

Nope, I don't watch Shark Week, I just have basic cable. Anyway, I don't know if they are as detailed as I would like.

Ah, 100 posts! So much to learn!

Check out my website (see link below). I will have a video (DVD) out on Sharks and Rays of California in the next two months. However, that might not cover enough species for you since it is only a regional portrayal.

I have a mess of questions for Dr. Bill... Do you know where, locally, would be a good place to go looking for horn sharks? Are there any dive outfits that would be good to contact regarding this? Are they seasonal? Will this sort of thing be covered in your DVD?

Thanks!

I'd have to check my records, but I seem to run into small horn sharks throughout the year. My newspaper column on horn sharks (see link below) indicates the larger individuals are in shallower waters during the summer but return to deeper waters in winter. The smaller ones remain in the shallows most of the time.

I don't think any dive operators offer horn shark dives... too unpredictable. You can see them in many kelp forests and rocky aeas in SoCal. The islands may be better places than the mainland, but then it has been 35 years since my last SoCal mainland dive!

DVDs from the UK probabaly won´t be viewable on US DVD players.
