Sidemount Diving: Fad, Phase or Here to Stay?

My first experience on scuba was with side-mounted cylinders, but I would not say my friends and I were diving... more like crawling through sumps in dry caves. So, to call SM a fad is a bit misleading, as too are those bloody awful pictures.

Side-mount is a great tool to have at your disposal. Done correctly, it is easy, streamlined, and comfortable. And it does have broad applications. However, notwithstanding the whole: How come everyone became an expert overnight? question; one is tempted to ask why there are so few real standards in place.
