I just found the SDI Standards and Procedures document for Solo Diver because I wanted to check if the Y valve, which I don't think I've ever seen anywhere, is mentioned as permitted redundancy as far as the course is concerned.

Turns out:
"One of the following must be used to provide an additional independent regulator attached to an air source: pony cylinder, twin cylinders with isolation, H-valve, independent doubles, or SpareAir"

I am a bit baffled that SDI thinks this is a sound equipment recommendation for their course. I would have remembered if that was mentioned in the course materials, but I think there was no real discussion of the actual equipment type allowed - the above is from a doc aimed at instructors.
