SPG Boot? Better to have or unnecessary?

What do you mean servicing? :) I thought the usual shops only take apart/rebuild the Regs and first stage.

Do they do anything with the SPGs as well, as part of the servicing?

As mentioned above the o-rings on the spool should be changed when the reg is serviced. I must admit, I preferred SPGs not to have a boot. Some boots can be a pain to work with; because of that I know a couple of techs who don’t change the spool or the o-rings.
 
I dive just brass and glass; I like it and it is easy to see if you have any leaks at the swivel and easy to clean post dive.
