Location
Cape Town, South Africa. Two oceans on my doorstep
A few weeks ago I came across a strange looking fish on a dive in False bay / Cape of Good Hope / South Africa.
The fish was about 50 cm long and its shape pretty much resembled pictures I saw of a spiny horsefish. (fishbase). It could fold down its dorsal fin. The pectoral fins pretty much resembled the shape of the fish on fishbase.
Its colour scheme was very distinctive dark brown with longitudinal yellow stripes. Unfortunately I only managed to take a quite crappy pic. before it swam away.
All I could find about Mr. (or Mrs.) Spiny Horsefish is that they seem to live around the southern circumpolar islands (12° to 25° south of the Cape)
Does anyone have footage (colour) or links for me?
Does the brown / yellow colour scheme ring bells?
I am very keen to visit the site again and try to get a good pic as nobody seems to have spotted this fish before.
The site was Roman Rock (northern side) off Simonstown at about 20 m.
