Does anyone have any info (good sites, water temps, ability needed to dive) some sites in the San Diego area and the Ft. Lauderdale area?

I can't tell you too much about the Ft. Laud. area. I haven't been there just yet, but I hear there some excellent drift diving in the area. I'm hoping to remedy that very soon though.

A few good places to try out would be the springs in Gainesville/North Florida area. The nice thing about the springs is that they're good for both novice and experienced divers. Visibility is usually excellent (150+ feet) and the water temp is always 72 degrees. Here are some sites to check out.

Another place would be Alexander Springs in Central Florida. It's a very novice dive, only about 25 deep, but a great place to test and get used to your gear. A great site for more info is http://underwaterflorida.homestead.com

As for some saltwater diving, you should head down to the Keys. They're only a couple hours further south of Ft. Lauderdale. I was in Marathon for my advanced OW dives and it's beautiful. Around this time of year the water is quite warm (~80 degrees). Check out http://www.fla-keys.com

Have fun!

Brian,
Welcome to SCUBA! I hope you find it as enjoyable as I do. As far as this board goes and the opinions you may read on what to buy and what is best, I say find what works for YOU!
Consider the type of diving you will be doing and include what you plan on doing on down the road. Also, evaluate equipment as it pertains to YOU. Does it fit comfortably on YOU? Is it easy for YOU to adjust/set up/control/utilize/etc? Does it meet the requirements for the type of diving YOU plan to do(cold water, fresh or salt, tropical)? Does it have the versatility to accommidate your long-term dive plans? Find the gear that is right for YOU!
Rarely will you see a post on this board from a member who has a piece of equipment that they don't like. To admit that is to admit they made a bad purchase(ie:decision). I could list the equipment I use and tell you how and why I think it is the best, but that would be misleading because it's the gear that works for ME. You need to ask questions, visit different LDS's, and find the setup that best suits YOU! Take the opinions on this board for what they are. Opinions. You are taught to plan your dive and dive your plan. Treat your gear purchase the same way, and I think you will be satisfied with the outcome.

Dive Safe! Dive Often!

Thanx jetwrench, that is the best advice I've gotten on equipment purchases thus far. Everyone has shared quite a few opinions and is actually making the whole decision easier. Atleast from the different opinions I know what questions to ask now, and some stuff to avoid. Thanx for the input

New diveraz,
Best of luck on your Ow!.
I am also new to diving and about to start my AOW next weekend which will be my first dive in the cold English waters.I still do not own regs or bc ,In my opion take your time testing out losts of different ones.Manufactures bring out new ones each year for a new look so does this means last years were bad ,no.I have bugged every one at the local club by asking them to let me have a go on there gear and not one of them has ever said no.I think they will be secretly pleased if i buy the same as them as this makes them fell they bought the right gear.I do not know what sought of diving i am going to enjoy yet but once i have done my adventures in diving i will have a better idea and then i shall buy gear to reflect this .After gettig the basics i bought a computer so what ever diving i do will controlled , safe and also logged into the computer which you can down load to you pc for future reference. This board has given me exellent advice and they all genuinly encourage you what ever your problem or level.

Regards,

MAL..
