Ok, I want to take advantage of the hot shoe, I don't want an optically triggered strobe. But the price on the basic DS-125 setup compared used to non DS strobes on ebay is pretty significant. The DS-50 saves money but is it going to work with macro? Is it worth 10x the price for TTL? What if I purchased a used substrobe 100 and just used it on manual, would it really be that inconvenient?

Sorry about the basic questions but my diving friends are still at the disposable camera stage and it isn't fair to make a salesman educate me if I plan to go cheap at ebay.

I've been using a DS-51 and just got my second. They're good strobes, fantastic for Macro, but a little tough with the wide angle as the beam is pretty narrow. It's not impossible to get W/A shots, but it's tougher than it would be with a strobe that has a wider beam.

IMHO - if you have the money to spend - Yes.
