This message is posted solely for the information of ScubaBoard members & guests who live in Australia.

Some maritime archaeology students at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, have prepared a standard letter addressed to the Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP (simply known as ‘JULIA’ to us Australians), requesting that the Australian Government ratify the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

There is more detail on the following Facebook page including a link to the standard letter - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Take-the-PlungeProtect-Australias-Heritage/106503246113620

For your information, ratifying the convention would allow for the protection of WW 1 & WW 2 naval battle sites in which Australian forces participated and the associated wreck sites as well as sunken aircraft wreck sites. The standard letter does include examples of these sites.

If any of you do send a copy of the letter to Julia, it would be appreciated if you could make a post on the above Facebook site in order to provide feedback to the students.
