I'm looking for a tank light to be used for night dives. A more earth friendly replacement of cyalumes. Anyone have comments or suggestions on brand/kind?

Thanks.

Underwater Kinetics and Princton Tec both offer tank lights. The UK tank light is pretty close to a cylume stick in size. The princton tec is a little squatter but offers longer burn times. Both use AA batteries. If you use NiMh rechargeables they are both probably more environmentally freindly.

How about the little blinkers made by Cetacea ?

Does anyone have any experience with them?

I have not dove with their little blinking marker lights. One of the people I dive with now and then has a blinking marker light that replaces his regulator yoke knob. It appears to be pretty similar and I am frankly not real impressed with it.

I have used thier Firefly marker lights and they come in several flashing, non flashing and strobe variations and are quite useful.

The Firefly's use larger AA batteries, are inexpensive and seem to work well. You can connect them to the tank valve like a light stick and the waving action in my opinion makes the light more likely to be visible through 360 degrees.

You can also mask off one side of the non flashing light model with a piece of electrical tape (so it does not shine in your eyes), tape the light to your console and use it to light your gauges on night dives.

You can also tape it to your dive flag which makes it easier for the boat to track you on night dives. The strobe models are even bettter as they increase the visibility on the surface at night and also underwater in limited visibility.

I am not a big fan of diving wth buddies with stobes on them - they are visible but they are all you can see as your night vision is shot. But strobes can be useful underwater for marking anchor lines/ascent lines in low viz or at night. In my experience a strobe will double or triple the distance at which you can see the ascent line in limited viz.

I have a Krill electronic lightstick which I like a lot (it was recommended in a couple of previous threads). Gives off a steady glow and runs for ages on two AA batteries. Several buddies have commented that it makes me easier to spot when night diving in a group.

I'm glad I saw this. Sounds like an Indiglo cylinder, which works for me. I think I will get together with some people at work and get a set of bulk. We have about 6 or 7 divers at work.

I have a krill light (green), but I don't think its really bright enough. I prefer the glo-toob light. It's a lot brighter and can be purchased here:

The FX version has a bunch of different modes that flash or pulse.

There have been some problems with leaking, but the manufacturer assures me that the just had some faulty caps
and they've been great about replacing it. New ones shouldn't have this problem.
