I usually leave octopi where I find them, I never carry them along on a dive.

Personally, I find taking them for a ride on one's head to be the right call sometimes.
 
I'm guessing you're carrying a pony bottle as your backup air and so don't see the reason to have an octo as well (i.e., 3 2nd stages). I'm almost always in doubles, so I have 2 2nd stages, but if I were doing a lot of single tank solo w/ a pony I'd probably take off the octo.
