I am a So Cal diver but have been to FL and dove with Jim Abernethy. NEVER AGAIN!!!

To be honest, the thought of being in a cage and getting up close & personal with these magnificent animals sounded terribly exciting, and I wanted to do it... until I read the book, "Devil's Teeth" by Susan Casey. The teeth they are referring to are not those of the great white- but of the Farralon Islands in northern CA. This is a true story of the scientists who lived on these uninhabitable islands to study the sharks. Cage diving not only puts the divers at risk, but (dare I say), more importantly, the sharks.

Have to agree, never been a fan of the shark cage diving....if you going to do it, do it diving without the cage. Much more adrenaline and since there is no chumming of the water, the sharks are more relaxed. Than being said, I've only dived with Sand Tigers, but that was enough for me....

I think the article is talking about diving with sharks without a cage.
But then....thats CDNN...trying to make a point...
Does anyone know what that point is?
Or do they just hate diving that much?

Interesting stats. Do you know the source? As for the article posted by OP I am not sure of the actual point. I guess I need to read it again. The book looks interesting. I would not want to dive with sharks but know of many who love it and have not had any close encounters of the sharp kind.

I wish I had a link to the video I saw on TV a couple days ago. Two divers were in a cage off of South Africa watching great white sharks. The Shark forced its head into the cage and the divers were barely able to escape.

Why is it bad to cage dive for sharks? Obviously because it doesn't give the sharks a fair chance to get up close and personal with us! Well, except for the divers I know who have been in cages to observe great whites... and had them go right through the cage. Fortunately the ones I observed were so frightened by the fangs in MY mouth that they steered clear of the cage.
