Cabo San Lucas used to be the spot required by law where Spanish ships from the Far East to make landfall. That also made it a very nice place for those who would like to relieve the Spanish of their cargo after a long voyage (often the Spanish ships would have only a couple dozen able men aboard). I would imagine that there are a lot of wrecks in deep water that were picked over.

There is a local story that a construction worker found a gold/silver hoard. As the story goes, he made a rapid departure from CSL to avoid government interest in his find.
