I have been accused of diving into a bottle of wine on many occasions, and not in a good sense. I am just trying to remember the last time I saw a bottle with a cork in it

Well, I won't object to the stopper, but the choice of glass... Really... :p

I have to admit, we drink everything from these:

A while back the town was full of promo boxes of Torres 10yo + 2 glasses at a steep discount, we now have a lot of them.

Red wines need to breathe...!

Usually. Some not maybe.

Yes! Particularly more tannic red wines should breathe a little. Letting it breathe makes a difference that you can taste in a blind taste test.

Depends on their age.

The young'uns need to breathe for quite a while. Decant with liberal splashing to mix in some air, leave for quite some time.
If it's close to end-of-life, decant carefully and slowly to leave the dregs in the bottle, drink just after decanting. Because if you leave it to "breathe", it'll trip over the top and dry out.
