Hello. My husband and I are looking to volunteer on the Great Barrier Reef in late Nov/early December. I have an open water certification, but really prefer to work on skills for a while because I dive maybe one time a year. There are a few projects that seem great for me in Cairns, but not so much for my husband who is a divemaster and has many water skills including scientific diving. Do any of you have recommendations on organizations using volunteers on conservation/research projects on the Great Barrier Reef? Also, interested in other dive travel info since one way or another we want to dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Thanks in advance!

Check out universities and citizen science initiatives. James Cook University might have some volunteer opportunities especially since your husband is a scientific diver. I know there's at least one fish identification citizen science program (I don't remember the name) for the GBR that isn't really an organized volunteer effort but could be worth looking up. Beyond that, ask dive shops in the area. Good luck!

Welcome to ScubaBoard. Tell us about the diving you have done.
