When compressed, they provide less, little, or no buoyancy.Deep sea fishing floats work. They are designed to compress and rebound and are inexpensive.
Actually they compress surprisingly little - possibly 10% at 100 feet and work quite well. You do have to get the hard foam ones. Took a pair sawed them in half and glued them back together around the strobe arms worked perfectly and after 30 dives no need to replace them.When compressed, they provide less, little, or no buoyancy.
