Yep, snapping shrimp. They are pretty neat little critters. They aggressively defend their burrow/shelter with a snap of their over-sized claw. When they pair for mating, both the male and female will then defend the burrow against other shrimp. They are tiny 3-5 mm, so given that they can create so much noise with their claws is pretty impressive!

Many different sounds are common if you pay attention to them - on land I've seen people not hear sirens and other loud noises because of the total attention to or stress created by another activity they were doing when the loud noise occurred.

The only sound I don't want to hear:
 
Some first stage regulators are designed to emit a small stream of bubbles whenever they are pressurized. Could be that.
 
If you are in the tropics it may be parrot fish. Crunch....crunch.....crunch
