What kind of button is this??

Found this today, looks like it is made of brass or copper. does anyone know what kind of button it is, ie time period etc....

ha ha rivr dvr, sounds like you know your stuff!! I had to use a couple of lift bags to lift it!!!
 
I t looks like a colonial button. Also heard of them being called tombach buttons( spelling ? ). They aren't worth much, but very cool anyway. :D
