We discovered Cozumel in January 2012 and then went 4x over the next 13 months. What initially attracted us was the cost. So cheap with a direct flight from Toronto. Great package (room, diving + 3 meals/day) at SCC that had us coming back again and again. Should have been 5x but we traded our April 2013 trip for a May trip to Grand Cayman. Glad we went but we won't be back. We could have done 2.5 trips to Coz for the same cost.

I agree with everything that has been said already. The cost is great. The diving FANTASTIC. But it is the people that keep us coming back. And it is these wonderful people that made us decide to retire in Cozumel in early 2014.

We are going back in November and this will be our last trip as a "tourist". I hope living in "paradise" is as wonderful as our past visits have been.

I'm looking forward to meeting you and Joe for lunch and/or diving when you become residents of the Cozumel.

I'm sure once you get settled you will love living on the island.

Like others have said, the early morning boats are best. Especially way south or way north. By the time you get back, shower, nap and head out for dinner the cruise ship monkeys have largely headed back to their ships. And the few who remain can make for some very entertaining entertainment as they are usually sloshed and funny as heck to watch. B.

Cheap airfares and package deals first brought me back. The diving is terrific; the dive op and people are terrific. Now, add to that the sense of adventure in learning about a place that you're falling in love with. This post, from the "Tamales" thread (Ms. Ann Thrope), captures it:

"On Juarez between Aves. 10 and 15 there is a door on the north side of Juarez behind a lightpole in the middle of the block. Ring the door bell and ask for Socorro. She makes all sorts of Yucatecan tamales on order for take-away. Very, very good ones." (Credit: El Graduado)

If this appeared in a travel forum about downtown Atlanta, I'd shriek in horror. But it sounds entirely plausible for Cozumel - indeed, a recommendation! That's the kind of stuff that keeps me coming back (or wanting to...) Each visit leaves me a little more hooked. tom

I love Cozumel! I feel totally at home there! We stayed at both a resort and a private home the two times we went and LOVED it! If it had been up to me I would have taken this years fall trip there again but hubby wants to go to Roatan. I hope it is just as nice. Fingers crossed.

Wife and I are going to Roatan this November, but I suspect we will there in the rain wondering why we didn't go to Cozumel like last year. My wife has never been to Roatan and wanted to see what it was like.

My wife went to Cozumel in 1980 on the now-scuttled Texas Clipper for a Summer School at Sea program between high school graduation and starting college. She loved it and wanted to return but what with college, then medical school, then babies we just never had the time or money.

We got a fantastic deal at the Presidente so went with the excuse of "getting our nitrox certifications". We loved every minute. Our son was at camp, but as soon as he finished, we knew we had to take him. Once he went, we were done for. We'd never vacationed the same place twice, unless you count Walt Disney World, but even there we never stayed at the same resort twice. After our family trip to Cozumel, that's the only place anyone wanted to go. Walt Disney World fell off the map, since we could go to Cozumel at that time and for less money. We used to be world travelers - now we just go to Cozumel.

A few years later, we convinced my dubious parents to visit. As soon as they returned they began planning their next trip. After a few years of that, my extremely frugal mother actually brought up the idea of buying a house on the island (my dad always wants to buy a house anyplace nice he visits...). To my even greater surprise, she didn't change her mind and we all bought a house together.

Now what brings us back to the island is that half our stuff is there. Well, all our dive gear at least. We have friends we want to catch up with, repair parts that need to be delivered to the house, tacos to eat, and beaches to comb. We actually dive less frantically than we used to - there will always be another visit, and it's nice to have some quiet time by the pool or at the beach. We now typically dive 3-4 days out of a week and have had a few visits with no diving at all.
