Your local dive store usually has a dive club. You could join other dive clubs. Here is a good link for southern California. LAdiver.com: Southern California Diving Resources

You should check out spearboard. There's a lot of people in socal on that board.

I second spearboard...Many of the spearos are freedivers. You can also check out FII (freediving instructors international) or PFI (performance freediving); both offer courses and you may be able to hook up with some of their students as they teach all over the country.
