keep away from Gulf side, it will be rough!

i went to Phuket in Dececmber and friend to Koh tao, took her 1 week to get there as no boats were running, mean while we were diving in clear blue skies and 20m + vis.

Marina divers are good in Karon beach Phuket, they do all the instructor stuff www.marinadivers.com (i think), but go to my site and check out the pics, there is a link to marina divers as well.

wife is from Phuket, if you need any help let me know!

and get certified with a reputable shop that has a liveaboard. You'll be working, albeit a little, in 4-6 weeks and with a little luck you'll be sent out to the Similans as a DM. Tons of Europeans do this... white and blue, moskito, (make sure they own the boat, not just book the boat).

Just show up and check out the scene. Every shop will want your DM business. Phi Phi Scuba seems to attrack a lot of DMs in training. Just go Carlitta's Bar (where the sun shines up your #ss)... many DMs have a beer or two there at night. A lot of the blondes are from your neck of the woods.
