Is rental equipment always that expensive in the US???

Usually not as bad as Gilboa pricing... Warm water diving - you should assume about $35 for full gear plus air/nitrox additional.

Caves is the only realistically viable option here in the winter time. I tend to start looking south right around September... FL, Caribbean...

Getting in on a pool session with your local dive shop is always an option. Just ask if they’ll allow you in the pool while they’re doing OW/refreshers. It will at least keep the rust off.
