Yo! Just bought a Sony DSC-N1 8MP digital. It's essentially a point and shoot type, and I'm curious if it's possible to sync a strobe to the camera externally (with no sync cord). I have yet to purchase the Sony UW housing but I'm sure it has no bulkhead plug, since the camera provides no plug for an external flash. I can't imagine that the USB port could provide this capability,...this will be a fantastic UW camera if I can provide it with a capable strobe. I believe I've heard of flashes, or strobes, that sync by detecting the small flash from the camera,...is this true, and can anyone refer me to a source? Or is there a solution that I don't have a clue about? Thanks, Todd.

Welcome to the board.

Any of the strobes that are capable of being fired optically and are designed to work with digital cameras should work. An example is the Inon D2000. I use the D180, the D2000 replaced it and added some features. These strobes are not cheap but they do work well.

There are a lot of strobes that will work, some cheaper and some more expensive. Which is right for you depends on a lot on what you want the strobe to do. The less expensive strobes do not offer nearly enough power or beam angle for a lot of shots or the control necessary for close up or macro work. The old adage you get what you pay for applies here.

Yes, most digital cameras are synced via an optical slave usually with a fiber optic cord or external controller.

Fantasea Line's NanoFlash is inexpensive and is available in a package for as low as $179.

Yo! Jack! Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! $179 I can afford, and I could even upgrade to the next step if I saved up a bit. I'll test the Sony out on our yearly one week SCUBA this year, and add the strobe next year, if needed. I suspect I'll need it for anything farther away than about two to three feet. Thanks VERY much! Todd.
