So hubby and I headed back to the quarry on Labour Day. It was really rather chilly here in Ottawa and most of the divers there (there were not many) had on dry suits. The first time we went back after our check out dives, it didn't go well. My suit was really big (like 3 sizes too big) and I was so cold. The one positive out of that dive was that I was able to descend with no pain in my ears for the very first time and when I got to the bottom, rather than touching it, I floated over it.

I went into this dive thinking this would be fun and I have all the skills I need. The visibility was great (the best I have seen there) because, as I said, there was no one there practically. We got in and I was breathing slow and deep. I realized right away that I still had too much weight on me. I was loaded down..way too much on my check out dives (because I was nervous and not breathing deep...I get it..it just didn't help much). I really wanted to work on my bouyancy and I know getting the weights right is a big part of it. I had put two weights in my pocket so they could be easily removed. We hadn't started the dive really yet, so I gave hubby the up sign and we took the weights out.

This made such a difference...that and the deep breathing. I also worked on not breathing out through my nose all the time. I know it works for some people and you have to do it to equalize your mask, but for me, it just makes me mess with my mask more and I am trying to keep things simple.

We stopped at 15 feet and hubby was impressed with how different I was in the water. We swam out to the plane that is there (which is about 25 feet down) and I was having fun..taking it easy. Hubby motioned towards the tug boat, which is at 40-45 feet. Instead of taking it slow, I rushed there and tagged the boat. I was very proud, but winded because I rushed there. I stayed calm and slowed my breathing. It is much colder there, so we cirrcled the boat and headed back to the plane and then out.

NOW this is what diving is all about. I had so much fun. Dive two went really well also. This just helped my confidence. Hubby was worried about me because we are diving at Epcot in a couple of weeks. They have a tour there called Dive Quest. Now, he's not worried and neither am I. I look forward to it and I look forward to diving more in the future. I am hoping to start diving with the Wednesday group next year!

What a great post, and so fun to read! I recall the dive on which I first was really "feeling it." There comes a time for every diver, or should, when preoccupation with basics gives way to those things becoming good habits. We get a little confidence and get more comfortable in the water, and then we start to play a little, and then we explore and then we really start to see what is around us and then...we are really a diver! I hope you can say "what a great dive" after every dive. Dives are like pizza- some is better than others, but even the worst is pretty good!
