If depth is what you want, how about just writing depth on a plate with a ruler, that way you get both depth and measurements of the thing. I usually take quite a few photos of things, and If I want to know how deep the critter is, I usually remembers it. But, If it is important, I will take a picture of my pdc next to the critter to have all pertinent data easily available.
