Well, here's my report on Nekton's Puerto Rico/St. Croix itinerarry from the Dec. 8th-15th trip. Unfortunately, I don't believe that I got a great idea of how things really go due to the weather.
We were late pulling out of Fajardo on Saturday due to late arriving guests. The trip over was very rough and a lot of people were seasick (yeah you can forget that no seasickness thing) including some of the crew. We finally pulled into the leeward (western) side of St. Croix about 1-2pm on Sunday. I later found out that in addition to the rough weather, we were also going very slowly due to 1 engine being down. We spent the majority of the week on the west side of St. Croix as the weather was mostly too rough to go around to the northern side where I understand most of the better diving is. The west side of St. Croix is by and large not in great shape. There is a large amount of dead coral and there are few large fish or other animals there which I suspect is due to over fishing. However, the soft coral, sponges, fans, and small fishes are healthy and abundant. There were 2 sites on the west side I would consider good to very good, the Butler Bay wrecks, and the Frederickstadt town pier. The rest were average at best to down right awful. We did get a small taste of the north side on Tuesday when we were able to sneak around the corner for the day, unfortunately the vis was awful as we moved further around the north side so we were restricted to the north western corner. Based on what I saw, I suspect that the north side would have been pretty good diving had we been able to stay there.

The ship itself is about as others have described it, very plain and worn, but comfortable. The dive setup however, was really pretty good with the only problem being that the dive deck was a little crowded when everyone wanted to get into the water at the same time. The bad news was that it seemed that the disrepair extended to some of the ship's major systems and I was very disturbed when I found out mid week that the ship had only had 1 engine operable for some time. There was no nitrox either and it seemed there haden't been for a while and wouldn't be for some time to come. The food was just fine. Homestyle and pleanty of it. The crew and captain did a good to great job putting on happy faces when faced with the weather problems and mechanical difficulty.

In conclusion, I suspect that St. Croix is worth diving if you can get around the north side, although that remains for someone else to see. The Frederickstadt pier is a definite must dive, although 6 dives on 2 days was quite enough for me. The crew was great, but the mechanical problems on the Rorqual make me question Nekton's commitment to producing good trips.

Hey there fellow Buckeye ...

First question would be - was this your first Nekton cruise ? Reason for asking is that I have been on 6 Nekton itineraries (but not yet the PR/USVI one) and ALL of them have been excellent.

But on a different note - GO BUCKEYES in the BCS Nat'l Championship Bowl !!

Go Bucks! Yes this was my first trip with Nekton. Like I said, I suspect that without the weather and mechanical problems this would have been a great trip. It was still an ok/good trip and it certainly wasn't the crew's fault because they did everything they could. However, all the broken stuff did worry me a bit.

Greatly appreciate your info. I'm scheduled on 12/29.

Looks like I will be asking for my up front $200 for Nitrox back.

Why was the pier good? Lots of encrusted life?

The pier had pleanty of nice sponges etc. and the pilings of the old pier next to the new one had tons of encrustations, but the most impressive thing was the abundance of animals. Almost every pile of rubble under the pier had an octopus, eel, and lobster. Arrow crabs and misc shrimp were everywhere you looked and there were lots of seahorses. There was also a batfish, frogfish, and flying ganard. Plus it's really shallow so my average dive was 1 1/2 hours and you could probably do 2 hour dives if you are really good on air consumption.

I just contacted the Nekton regarding the nitrox issue, and here is their response:
In regard to your Nitrox question, I just called our engineer. He told me that what we’re dealing with are extremely hard-to-come-by parts for the RIX compressor. He said they’re doing everything in their power to get it fixed, but told me that he couldn’t guarantee it. Wish I could give you a definitive answer.

I hope they get it fixed, I like nitrox, especially on a liveaboard. We had a few people on the Eco Explorer in Palau a few weeks ago and they decided to do the nitrox cert. after one day of diving. I don't know that it will be a big issue for our trip to Medio, Bahamas, but I like the safety aspect when doing 4-5 dives per day! :D

Thanks for the nitrox update.

That was a definitive answer whether they realized it, eh? :)

I'm inclined to believe it's not happening. Like the rest of the trip variables, I guess I just have to let it ride. I would like that extra margin too.

Actually the, ah, engine is worrying me a touch. Not "left adrift" worry but "no diving" worry.

Wow, with the technology of today I just went and used the Google Earth overhead photo to see the pier Osufhorn is talking about. Using Weather.com radar map.

Osufhorn: Was it dive the pier or go on land day or could you go do both? I'd like to have both.

It was do both if you wanted. We were never forced to get off like it says in Nekton's info.
