Anyone see the latest PADI Sport Diver maagzine with the gear review? "THE BEST GEAR NOW."

I was drawn to the BC review where "air cells" (wings) were reviewed.

Am I missing something? I've never heard anyone call wings by the name "air cells."

It is reassuring that the people reviewing THE BEST GEAR NOW, giving me their expert opinions about what is THE BEST GEAR NOW, do not even the proper names of the gear they are reviewing.

I think the proper name for them (if there is any such thing) probably would be air cells. Dive Rite refers to them as air cells in all of their price and technical documents. I believe that Zeagle refers to them as air cells. Wings would also be appropriate.

The PADI mag, like most others, is no more than a slick catalogue for gear, parroting the manufacturers' products with a few interesting side stories which might or might not be interesting to scuba divers. That's how they exist.

Doesn't matter what they call 'em ... anybody who makes their gear choices based on reviews in a scuba magazine deserves what they end up with.

Who do you suppose pays those folks to do those "reviews"?

Might as well just walk into your LDS and ask them what's the "best" gear (... it'll always be what they sell, of course) ...

Yes I got my issue earlier in the week, but come on now you don't really consider Sport Diver magazine to be a consumer reports type of review do you? It's much more advertiser driven than unbiased reviews of new products. Good reading but understand its baseline.

Okay, so it is just me. I am missing something.

Many apologies to PADI for thinking that it was just blatant advertising.

A magazine is just what it is, a magazine. Some of the finest gear never gets a review because the companies will simply not pay for it and want honest reviews from the outside.

It became pretty clear to me when I checked their BC area on their gear page and nothing from Zeagle, DSS, Oxycheq, etc showed up that they were a shill magazine. Some magazines do a good job keeping their reviews of advertisers gear honest, but I am finding that the diving industry including many LDSs at least gear selection wise is a bit slimy. It is really difficult to find honest comparisons between gear from commercial outlets.
